29 Feb Watch ETS Profiles: Gil Quiniones – NYPA President & CEO
The U.S. electric power system is changing. From the rise of distributed energy resources to complex energy storage systems—all are driving the transformation of the future utility today. Last week Zpryme sat down with the executive leading the nation’s largest state electric utility and definition of a true thought leader, Gil C. Quiniones President and CEO of the New York Power Authority (NYPA). Mr. Quiniones responded to questions such as: How have your Filipino roots influenced your energy career? What’s been your greatest accomplishment as NYPA CEO? What trends are influencing the grid of the future?
The next greatest challenge in energy is to transform the grid from the current centralized one-way power-flow system to the integrated grid.
Quiniones is responsible for developing and implementing NYPA’s strategic vision and mission. NYPA is the nation’s largest state-owned electric utility, owning and operating one-third of New York State’s high voltage transmission system and providing a substantial portion of the state’s electricity from its clean power plants. Before joining NYPA in 2007 as Executive Vice President of Energy Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Mr. Quiniones served in several positions in the administration of New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, including more than four years as Senior Vice President of Energy and Telecommunications. He previously worked for Con Edison for 16 years and was one of four co-founders of Con Edison Solutions, the utility’s unregulated energy services company.
